Sunvolt was established by a father and son team, with a passion for solar energy technologies.  Both having an engineering degree definitely helps and lays a strong foundation.

Elbert Kruger has been an engineer for most of his life.  Designing systems for military and commercial applications.  These systems range from, control systems in ballistic missiles and tanks to advance power systems used in industrial manufacturing plants.

Iwan Kruger obtained a master’s degree in engineering and enjoys the challenge of working with various technologies.  These technologies include working with tiny 8-bit microcontrollers to, of course, analysing power requirements and designing solar energy systems.

Having extensive engineering capabilities is definitely one of Sunvolt strong suits.  Sunvolt believes in providing quality products and following a very systematic approach.  Analysing power requirements is absolutely crucial.

Having hardware and software capabilities also allows Sunvolt to provide bespoke solutions.

5 If excess power is generated by the solar panels this power may be exported onto the grid for further savings to the owner.

Types of solar systems

Grid-Tied System

A grid-tied solar system generates 220VAC power derived from solar panels normally mounted on the roof of a structure and synchronises it with the 220VAC mains input from the power grid. The system has an intelligent inverter that strives to utilise the maximum power output from the panels. The inverter however does not have the ability to store energy in a battery bank. The following is applicable to this type of system:

  • AC power will be generated from the solar panel while the sun shines.
  • If the grid power is interrupted during the day (i.e. while the sun is shining) power will still be delivered to the residence via the energy received from the solar panels.
  • If grid power is interrupted during the night the system cannot generate power as there is no battery from which stored energy may be drawn.
  • The cost of outlay for this type of system is less as the required inverter is less expensive and no battery bank is needed in the design.

Hybrid System

The hybrid based solar powered system is the most popular as it gives you the benefit of both worlds. The system generates 220VAC power derived from solar panels and synchronises it with the 220VAC mains input from the power grid. It also utilises a battery bank which it strives to keep fully charged in preparation for a possible power failure. The following is applicable to this type of system:

  • AC power will be generated from the solar panel while the sun shines.
  • The battery bank will be kept fully charged from either solar power or grid power.
  • In the event of a grid power failure during the day power will be generated from either the solar panels and/or battery bank.
  • If a power grid failure occurs in the evening power will be generated by utilising the battery bank. Power availablity will depend on the size of the battery bank and the charge stored before the power failure.
  • The cost of outlay for this type of systems is more than the grid tied system as the system requires a more inteligant inverter and the presence of a battery bank in the design.

Off-Grid System

Off grid systems generate 220VAC power without any power input from the grid. A larger number of solar panels and bigger battery bank capacity ensures the user will have power at all times. Energy acquired during the day from the sun provides power and charges the battery banks at the same time. During the nights enough energy (stored during the day) is available from the batteries to ensure the user will have enough power to meet his needs until the next morning when the sun arises again. The following is applicable to this type of system:

  • Does not require any power input from grid.
  • Self-sufficient in terms of power.
  • Will provide enough power during the day to bridge the sunless period during the night.
  • This type of system requires a bit more capital expenditure, than other types of solar systems, as a larger number of solar panels and a bigger battery bank is required.
